Written through an intersectional lens, the book moves beyond conventional narratives of women as flawless heroes. Instead, Nagrale presents women as they truly are- imperfect, vulnerable, ambitious, frightened, exhausted, courageous and constantly evolving. The stories explore how women navigate family, caste, class, poverty, education, marriage, motherhood, body image, mental health, violence, grief, friendship, work, love and belonging.
At the heart of the book is a simple yet profound idea: survival itself can be an act of courage. For some women, courage means leaving a familiar life behind. For others, it means returning to education, seeking therapy, setting boundaries, speaking about experiences that were expected to remain secret, overcoming mental-health struggles, choosing a different path or simply finding the strength to get through another difficult day.
Nagrale describes the women in her stories as “SHEROES” - not because they are fearless or undefeated, but because they continue despite everything life places in their way. Their journeys do not necessarily lead to conventional happy endings. Instead, they reflect the complicated reality of healing, where progress can coexist with pain and where beginning again can take many different forms.
The book also examines how childhood experiences and social expectations shape a woman's understanding of herself. From body image and gender roles to family relationships and the idea of being a “good girl,” the lessons learned during childhood can continue to influence choices, relationships, ambitions and self-worth long into adulthood.
One of the central messages of We Bloom in More Than One Colour is that while experiences shape people, they do not have to permanently define them. The stories explore the possibility of unlearning inherited patterns, establishing boundaries, choosing healthier relationships, parenting differently, changing dreams and rebuilding one's identity after loss or trauma.
The book carries a deeply personal dedication to the women whose lives have inspired and shaped the author. It pays tribute not only to women whose stories receive public recognition, but also to those whose courage remains unseen - the women who carry families while carrying their own wounds, who rebuild after loss, who make difficult choices and whose everyday victories may appear ordinary to the world.
Harshali Nagrale is a writer, political sociologist and intersectional Ambedkarite feminist. Deeply inspired by the literary works of Saadat Hasan Manto, she believes in preserving stories in their raw honesty and allowing people to remain exactly as they are while examining their journeys through an intersectional lens. Her writing draws from themes of healing, brokenness, resilience and hope, often finding extraordinary courage within ordinary lives.
Nagrale holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Bristol and combines her academic perspective with creative non-fiction, creating a bridge between scholarship and storytelling. Her approach reflects a belief that stories cannot change the past, but they can transform the way people carry it.
With its intimate portrayal of women's lives and its emphasis on the many forms that courage and healing can take, We Bloom in More Than One Colour seeks to offer readers more than stories of survival. It invites them to recognise pieces of themselves-and perhaps discover forgotten strength along the way.
The book ultimately leaves readers with a message of hope: people are not defined solely by what has happened to them. They can change, question, rebuild, love, begin again and continue becoming who they are.
